NRC for all to meet the Meitei Group MHA officials, seek free movement of India news

A delegation of 19 delegations of 19 delegates of three Manipur Valley-based Civil Society organizations met on Monday with the continuity of the previous round of talks with the Union Home Ministry officials in Delhi.

This was the first time representing all the three major groups – Kokomi, Emuko and FOCS representatives with MHA officials in Delhi. The delegation of the Ministry of Home Affairs was led by North East Advisor of the Ministry, a Mishra and IB Joint Director Rajesh Kamble.

In a joint statement, he outlined the major issues raised in the meeting. It states that it could “reduce the regional integrity of the state,” confirmed its non-non-useful stance on any initiative, “a stance that is opposed to the demand for a ‘separate administration’ system for parts of the state by cookie-groups, where their community is in majority.

He said, “To ensure free movement for all, the delegation pressed for immediate needs emphasized that it is not only a fundamental right and a constitutional obligation of the government, but also the first necessary step towards restoring peace in the state,” he said in his statement.

Since the onset of the conflict in May 2023, either members of the conflicting community have not traveled extensively in areas where other communities are in majority. The inauguration of the state’s highways by all communities has also been controversial with cookie groups, which hesitate to agree on this without discussing their political demands.

He insisted on two other long -standing demands. First, that a National Register of Citizen (NRC) should be implemented in the state or a uniform mechanism to “address the issue of illegal immigration”, which he has considered the major cause of instability in the region.

The second cookie-who opposed the expansion of the suspension of operations (SOO) agreements with rebel groups “without a pre-wide and cordial understanding among all the stakeholders of the state.”

Last month, the representatives of Cookie-Zo had pledged that the community would have dialogue with the Government of India only by the SOO groups and negotiations between these groups and the central government, which are reviewing the ground rules of SOO agreements.

“MHA officials assured the delegation that the matters raised were being seriously considered and would be sent to the appropriate officials for necessary action and approval.”
