External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Tuesday urged the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) to be committed to his founding goals of terrorism, separatism and extremism for “unconnected” stance on such threats. Speaking at a meeting of SCO Foreign Ministers at Tianjin, with his Chinese and Pakistani counterparts, Jaishankar strongly justified India’s response to the Pahgam terror attack on 22 April.

He said, “The three evils established by SCO were terrorism, separatism and extremism. Not surprisingly, they are often together. Recently, we saw a graphic example in a terrorist attack in Pahgam on 22 April in India,” he said.

The Minister of External Affairs said the attack was “deliberately organized to weaken the tourism economy of Jammu and Kashmir and sowed a religious partition.

Without naming China directly, Jaishankar also gave a veil reference to Beijing’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), saying that cooperation should respect regional integrity and sovereignty.

“It is necessary that such cooperation is based on mutual respect, sovereign equality and regional integrity and sovereignty of member states,” he said.

Jaishankar said that today the world was struggling with “more struggle, competition and forced”, and called to stabilize the global order. He said, “The challenge before us is to stabilize the global order, stabilize various dimensions and through it, we face long challenges that endanger our collective interests,” he said.
