PM Modi targets China's rare-earth strangold: 'Stop weapon'. Bharat News

BRICS countries should work together to secure supply chains for important minerals and ensure that any country uses these resources as a “weapon” against others, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said at the annual summit.

In a session of multilateralism, financial matters and artificial intelligence on Sunday, Modi also called for building global standards for the use of AI to maintain transparency and prevent misuse.

Prime Minister’s comments come amid concerns over Chinese restrictions on export of these important resources, called rare earth, as well as its opaque policy approach in the region.

Modi said, “We need to work together to create supply chains for important minerals and technology and it is important to ensure that no country uses these resources for its selfish advantage or as a weapon against others,” Modi said.

Important minerals such as lithium, nickel and graphite are considered important for high-end technology products including electric vehicles, drones and battery storage. China has been a prominent player in the globally important mineral supply chain.

On artificial intelligence, Modi said that it can greatly improve everyday life, but also increases concerns about risk, morality and prejudice.

The Prime Minister announced that India will organize the AI ​​Impact Summit next year.

“We believe that to solve concerns and encourage innovation should be given equal importance in AI rule. We should work together for AI responsible,” Modi said.

“Global standards must be made that can verify the authenticity of digital content, so that we can identify the source of the material and maintain transparency and prevent misuse,” he said.

The Prime Minister also proposed to build the BRICS Science and Research Repository, which can also serve as a valuable resource for the global South countries.

Speaking in another session on ‘Environment, COP -30 and Global Health’, he said, “We have to take all countries that are facing food, fuel, fertilizer and financial crises due to various stresses.” “Developed countries believe about the future, these countries should also have the same confidence. With any double standards, permanent and inclusive development of humanity is not possible.”

“Under the BRICS Chairman of India, we will work on redefining BRICS. BRICS would mean – flexibility and innovation for cooperation and stability,” he said.

Modi met Bolivia President Luis Alberto Ares Catcora and discussed ways to increase cooperation in areas such as important minerals, trade and investment, healthcare and space among others. He also met Uruguay President Yamandu Orsi on the occasion of the BRICS summit and discussed methods to promote cooperation in areas such as trade, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, technology and defense.
