President's rule for another 6 months in Manipur, Amit Shah today to take resolution in Rajya Sabha. Bharat News

Union Home Minister Amit Shah will carry forward a proposal to expand the President’s rule in Manipur for one and six months in Rajya Sabha on Friday.

It states: “This House approves continuity in the force of proclamation in relation to Manipur on 13 February 2025, which was issued by the President under Article 356 of the Constitution, for another period of six months from August 13, 2025 to six months.”

This step to expand the President’s rule also comes when the state’s Meitei and Naga NDA Mlas are operating a month long campaign to restore a popular government in the state.

Former Chief Minister N. Berain Singh implemented the President’s rule in Manipur on February 13 after leaving the post from the post, mainly as a result of political pressure from other BJP MLAs of the Miti community who were dissatisfied against his leadership.

In the last Parliament session, Shah had said that the step was taken to present the President’s rule as no one claimed to lead the government after Singh’s resignation. However, since April, the NDA MLAs, including Singh,, their close MLAs, as well as those who were dissatisfied against him – have been insisting on the restoration of a “popular” government, citing the lack of support for the President’s rule and the notion that there is not enough movement towards restoration of generality in the state.

Celebration offer

Steps to increase the President’s rule in the state is the reason for further dissatisfaction between Meitei and Naga MLAs.

There is a relative peace of months in the foothills, where the Metei-Magority Valley-Cookie-majority meets the hills, which was one of the worst affected parts of Manipur in the ongoing struggle. The last major cycle of violence among communities took place in November last year.

In the last month, three important weapons have been recovered by security forces in the state, and the government has expressed its intention to facilitate a large section of people displaced by violence by the end of the year. However, more than 26 months after the onset of the conflict, there is no significant headway on dialogue between the stakeholders of Metei and Cookie-Zo communities.
