Ahead of the Quad Leaders Summit in New Delhi this year, on Thursday, a senior Japanese diplomat indicated that in future quad grouping could include “similar -ideology” nations, it can be called a ‘developed structure “.
It comes to Washington DC barely a week after the meeting of Quad Foreign Ministers, which was attended by Foreign Minister S Jaishankar.
During an event in New Delhi, Noriyaki Abe, Minister of Political Affairs, Japan’s Embassy in India, answering a question whether South Korea or the Philippines can be added to the quad as new members, said, “I do not exclude the possibility of adding other similar -minded countries in this structure.” An interactive session was organized by the embassy in collaboration with the Center for Integrated and Holistic Studies, a New Delhi -based Foreign Policy Think Tank.
Quad was called “a developed framework”, Abe said that they wanted to expand cooperation with regional partners. “But this possibility is not discussed in the Quad context,” he said.
For the Quad Leaders Summit, US President Donald Trump, Australian PM Anthony Albani and Japanese PM Shigeru Ishiba have been slated to travel to the national capital later this year, even working on specific dates.

Abe also talked about disagreement related to tariffs that other quad partners, including India and Japan, may be with the US at the moment, and how they plan to overcome those devices and work on cooperation for “an independent and open India-traditional”.
He said, “We have many deviations. Whether or not, we need US engagement to promote peace, stability and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific sector. We should not create any power vacuum in the field,” he said.

Abe said, “We need to engage and we need to multiply our cooperation with equal ideologies including America. But we can expand our cooperation with other regional partners,” Abe said.
Even quad partners have often expressed concern about the unilateral tasks of China in the South China Sea and Eastern China Sea, Abe insisted that “Framework is not intended to do anything with any specific country”.
He also talked about quad foreign ministers, in which the Pahalgam terror attack was condemned, even in the joint statement there was no mention of Pakistan. He said, “To develop international partnership against terrorism, especially cross -border terrorism, Japan ranks second for any country, which should be taken by all concerned parties, to support concrete efforts,” he said.
Abe said that Japan was one of the few countries that had previously approached, consulted the Government of India at the level of National Security Advisor and Foreign Minister (after the terrorist attack). He said, “India also sent its highest delegation to Japan as the first phase in this Asia-Pacific region,” he said, “he had an important session in the high leadership in Japan. The delegation provided us with a long time to deepen our understanding of this heinous crime of terrorism and India’s position.”
