In an emotional moment, the Chief Justice of India Bhushan Ramakrishna Gavai clearly shared individual anecdotes, one side was rarely seen by the public because he raised him to raise his parents’ struggles.
With visible emotions in his eyes and voice, the Chief Justice shared how his father’s aspirations shared his own way.
“I wanted to be an architect,” he said, “but my father had different dreams for me. He always wanted me to be a lawyer, a dream that he could not fulfill himself,” the CJI said.
Last month, Gawai, who was sworn in as the 52nd Chief Justice of India, was speaking at an event organized by the Nagpur District Court Bar Association to honor her climb for the highest judicial post in the country. However, it was his individual reflections that resonated the most with the audience.
Speaking about his parents and his influence on his life, Gavai was briefly found briefly. “My father gave himself to serve Ambedkar. He himself wanted to be a lawyer, but could not fulfill that wish as he was arrested to be a part of the freedom movement,” Gawai said.
“We were a joint family with many children, and all the responsibility came to my mother and aunt,” said CJI.
To fulfill his father’s wish, he let his dream go to become an architect, he said. “Later, when my name was recommended for the post of a judge in the High Court, my father said that if you remain a lawyer, you will only go after money, but if you become a judge, you will follow the path set by Ambedkar and do well for the society,” Gawai said.

His father also thought that his son would one day become the Chief Justice of India, but he did not win to happen, the CJI said. “We lost her in 2015, but I am happy that my mother is there,” Gavai said. The Chief Justice was in a hurry to understand that the audience was changed emotional and perhaps to lighten the mood, he shared another day’s memory when a check bounce case was registered against actor Hema Malini in Nagpur district court.
