The Tamil Nadu government on Tuesday suspended Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) HM Jayaram, a day later he was taken into custody by the Thiruvallur District Police after the Madras High Court directed him to arrest him.
A senior IPS officer, Jairam, is accused of abandoning the kidnapping of a minor boy, who allows his vehicle to be used by a group of people who demanded forcibly separation of inter-caste couples. The boy is the brother of the man who married a woman of a separate caste despite his family opposition.
The Tamil Nadu Home Department issued a suspension order of Jairam on Tuesday, hours later he was questioned for about six hours at the Thiruvalangadu police station and later moved to the DSP’s office in Thiruthani.
Meanwhile, Jairam contacted the Supreme Court on Tuesday, demanding to be on the order of the High Court, directing his arrest. The apex court on Wednesday agreed to hear the case.
The High Court order came during the hearing of an anticipatory bail plea filed by KV Kuppam MLA and Purachi Bharam Kachi leader “Puvai” M Jagan Murthy, which is also an accused in the case. On Tuesday, the MLAs appeared in front of the investigating officer in Thiruvalangadu, complying with the directions of the High Court.
The case stems from a complaint filed by a woman named Lakshmi, who said that her elder son Dhanush married a young woman from Thei district without the approval of the later family. When the couple hid, a group allegedly entered Lakshmi’s house on May 10 under the leadership of the girl’s family, kidnapped her younger son, and took her into Jairam’s official vehicle.
According to Lakshmi, the boy was later found near a hotel with injuries. Five people, including the girl’s father, a lawyer and now a minor policeman, have already been arrested. He allegedly implicated both MLA and ADGP in his statements.

On Monday, Justice P Vellmurugan of the High Court directed the police to arrest Jairam. “A strong message should go out to the public that no one is above the law,” the judge said. The court also slammed the MLA to allegedly misuse its position and orchestrate the “Kangaroo courts”, saying that people were entitled to elected representatives who retained justice, not reduced it.
