The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) reiterated the demand for public apology from the Congress to implement the Emergency on the occasion of the recently seen 50th anniversary.

Addressing a press conference at the party’s national headquarters, BJP national spokesperson Sambbit Patra alleged to try to mislead people on the issue that it had changed the constitution under the clock of the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi during this period.

He also announced the formation of a four-member fact-Khoj committee to visit West Bengal after the rape incident at a law college in Kolkata. The committee constituted on the instructions of BJP President JP Nadda included former Union Minister and Mumbai Police Commissioner Satya Pal Singh, East-Delhi MP Meenakshi Leki, Lok Sabha MP Bipbb Deb and Rajya Sabha MP Manan Kumar Mishra.

Citing media reports from this period related to Indira Gandhi, Patna said, “This is the biggest slap in the face of those who demand us to change the constitution. Indira Gandhi-G said that her first task (after coming to power) will have to amend the constitution.”

The BJP has chosen the Congress to reiterate its demand for apology, which referred to the amendment of the Constitution during the Emergency in response to the attack of the opposition party, RSS Sarkarvah Dattatreya Hosbale said to discuss whether ‘socialist’ and ‘secular’, have been projected during emergency constitution.

Union Ministers Shivraj Singh Chauhan and Dr. Jitendra Singh threw his weight behind the idea on Monday in response to the criticism of the Congress of Hosabale’s comment. The BJP has not commented on the suggestion of the RSS leader.

On Monday, BJP national spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi attacked the Congress to be “behind every task of tampering with the Constitution and its spirit in the last seven decades, and demanded that it apologize for the Emergency.

Referring to another news item, whether he questioned whether the constitution was actually serving people, Patra said that these were the expected answers for those in the Congress who were questioning the memory of the 50th anniversary of the Emergency.

Attacking both Trinmool Congress (TMC) and its government in West Bengal after the Kolkata Law College rape incident, Patra said it was painful to consider the state’s situation. “(TMC MP) Kalyan Banerjee says that what can we do if a friend rapes another friend … what kind of mentality is this?

He said, “There is no doubt that everyone is hurting on what is happening there … Mamta Banerjee should tender both forgiveness and resignation. Such treatment of women is just unacceptable,” he said.
