The Vice President is elected by an electoral college made from both houses of Parliament-Local Sabha and Rajya Sabha members, which also includes enrolled members. Unlike a presidential election, state assemblies do not participate.

Voting is held in Parliament House in New Delhi by secret voting, using a system of proportional representation with a single transferable vote. Each MP gets votes by ranking candidates in the course of preference. All votes carry the same price.

To be declared elected, a candidate must reach the required minimum number of votes – called quota. Its calculation is calculated by dividing the total number of valid votes from two and adding one (part, if any, is ignored). If a candidate does not cross the quota in the first round, one is first abolished with the first-virtue votes, and their votes are transferred to the remaining candidates based on the second priorities. The process continues until a candidate crosses the quota.

Dhankhar was elected to the post of VP in 2022, a former Governor of West Bengal and a lawyer by profession. His term was to end in August 2027. Citing health concerns, he wrote an resignation letter to President Drupadi Murmu on Monday evening when he presided over the Rajya Sabha proceedings.

According to sources, on Monday evening, there was friction between the government and Dhankhar on its decision to accept the speed of an opposition-fundamental impeachment against Justice Yashwant Verma in the upper house on Monday evening, even the BJP was preparing to pursue its pace with the support of opposition MPs in the Lok Sabha.

Till now the only public statement of the government was Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s post on X: “Mr. Jagdeep Dhikar ji has got many opportunities to serve our country in various capabilities as the vice -president of India.”
