Two elephants, including a calf, on Wednesday killed three persons, including a three-year-old boy, in two nearby villages in Raigad district of Chhattisgarh.

Both incidents took place in Lelunga Forest Range under Dharamjigarh Forest Division.

Elephants entered the village of Gosadih at around 2 pm and killed Satyam Rawat at three years. At that time, Rawat was sleeping outside the hut and his parents went inside to get something.

Elephants then participated in Mohanpur village and trampled Santara Bai Rathia (46) and Purushottam Khadiya (48).

While Purushottam got trapped under the debris of his house, which was destroyed by elephants, the sungara got trapped in the mud outside the house and trampled.

Jitendra Upadhyay of Dharmajiger’s Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) told The Indian Express, “One of the elephants is a woman and the other is her calf. She is a virgin. Some more loans are roaming and we have formed a special team to monitor 24/7 to monitor our movement, so that they do not harm the villagers.”

He said that immediate assistance of Rs 25,000 was provided to the families of each deceased.

Upadhyay said that the sarpanch of the village was also alerted for the elephant movement around 9 am on Tuesday. The official also said that efforts are being made to find out if the same elephant killed another person earlier this month.
