Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to meet German Chancellor Frederick Merz, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelancesi and Host, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Kananskis, where they will also address the outreach session of G7 leaders.
Modi, who reached Canada from Cyprus in the initial hours of Tuesday (time), said in a post on X: “Calgary landed in Canada, to attend the G7 Summit. To attend the summit. The summit will meet various leaders and share their views on important global issues. Stress on global south priorities.”
The global south includes developing and less developed countries of the world.
This is the first visit to Canada in a decade. After the then Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, the relationship between the two countries in 2023 accused the “potential” of the agents of the Government of India in the murder of a Nijar – one allegation India dismissed as “absurd” and “inspired”. This reduced diplomatic relations.
Modi will meet Carney and Merz for the first time as leaders of his countries. All these meetings, including Meloni and Zelanski, are expected to be between India’s time in late Tuesday and early Wednesday.
In the middle, he will address the outreach session of the summit on the issue of ‘energy security: diversification, technology and infrastructure to ensure access and strength in the changing world.’ He is expected to touch conflicts in West Asia and Europe.
A day earlier in Cyprus, Modi and President Nicos Christodoulides “expressed concern” over the ongoing struggles between Israel and Iran and Russia and Ukraine.

Saying that “this is not the era of war”, Modi said that “the resolution is a call of humanity through dialogue and restoration of stability”.
US President Donald Trump, who was expected to be in Kananskis for the outreach season on Tuesday, was left early to Washington DC.
India is Modi’s first foreign trip after launching Operation Sindore on 7 May, which targets terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan occupied by Pakistan on 22 April.
He is on a four-day tour of Cyprus, Canada and Croatia, three-nation.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Randhir Jaywal said, “PM will participate in the G7 discussion on the future of energy security including diversification, technology, infrastructure and investment to ensure access to a changing world.”
He said that the Prime Minister will also hold several bilateral meetings on the banks of the summit.
India has been regularly invited to the outreach session of the G7 Summit over the years.

G7 is an informal group of the world’s advanced economies – France, America, UK, Germany, Japan, Italy and Canada and the European Union. Its members meet annually at the G7 summit to discuss global economic and geopolitical issues.
On 1 January this year, Canada presided over G7 for the seventh time. This year is the 50th anniversary of the G7 Summit.
While India is not a member of G7, the Prime Minister has attended meetings at the last summit. This will be India’s 12th Partnership and Summit Outreach Session of Modi’s 6th participation.
