The Railway Board has proposed to prepare the seat reservation chart eight hours before the departure of the train. The chart is currently ready four hours before departure.
Officials said that for trains departing before 2 pm, the chart will be prepared at 9 pm last day.
A senior Railway Ministry official said that under the current system, passengers arriving at the stations in distant areas would have little clarity on their waiting list situation while leaving their homes.
“Now, passengers will get an update on the status of the weightlist in advance. There were many complaints about the time of chart preparation. Passengers coming from remote areas or major cities to take long distance trains had to return several times due to non-confusion of weightlinded tickets to passengers coming to the railway station.
The official said that Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav has instructed the board to start implementing this step in stages to avoid disruption.
Vaishnav also reviewed the upgradation of the passenger reservation system, which is expected to increase ticket booking capacity from more than 1.5 lakh ticket booking per minute. This will increase by about five times in the current system from 32,000 tickets per minute.
“Ticket inquiry capacity will increase from 4 lakhs ten times to more than 40 lakhs for more than 40 lakhs. Further, OTP-based certification will be done for Tatkal Booking from the end of July 2025. The user should be certified using the Aadhaar available in the Digilocker account or any other verificationable government ID.”
