Lok Sabha MP Gaurav Gogoi formally took over as the chairman of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee on Tuesday and called Bugul for next year’s election.
With less than a year of time to go for the 2026 Assam assembly elections, Gogoi was named the President of the Bedamar State Congress Unit last week.
Addressing party workers at Manebvendra Sarma Complex in Guwahati on Tuesday, he called upon them to prepare for an important election next year.
“We don’t have much time. We have 10 months. If in these 10 months, we do not work on strengthening and campaigning every day from today, then we will never be able to get close to our destination. But from today, if each of us has raised our responsibilities and think that the election has started and will work for the next 10 months, then it will work for the next 10 months, then it will work completely after the next 10 months. Guwahati.
Gogoi has taken over the state Congress when he and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is on a bitter face in which Sarma has accused Gogoi and his wife of relations with Pakistan and ISI. Along with taking charge with him, the upcoming state election is likely to take shape as a direct confrontation between the two leaders.

The fate of the Congress has recently been flagged in Assam. It won only three of the 14 seats in Assam in the last year’s Lok Sabha elections – Gogoi’s victory was won by the high point for the party in the elections, in which after a competition, in which Sarma launched a strict campaign against him.
The Congress also lost all five seats in the major assembly elections held last year and also performed a disappointing performance in the recent panchayat elections.
