Metro Rail Network in India: India’s metro rail network has crossed 1000 km, which has become the third largest in the world. It is on track to become the second largest metro network globally. The metro system has changed urban transport in the country. Millions of people rely on the metro rail network for quick, easy and inexpensive travel.
In recent years, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has made a huge jump in increasing the metro rail network in the country. India is setting new standards in modern urban dynamics, from the under-primary (under the Hooghly River in Kolkata) to driverless trains (Delhi Metro) and Water Metros (Kochi).
What is the operational length of the metro rail network in India?
Currently, the total operating metro rail network, including the RRT (regional rapid transit system), is about 1036 km. This urban mode of the transport system is available in 24 cities.
In a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha, Moshu, Tokhan Sahu, Mohua said that the government operated 339 km of metro network in the country in the last five years.
“In the last five years, including 2025-26, 339 km of metro network has been operational across the country, 34.65 km of metro network is starting in Karnataka,” he said.
The Union Minister further stated that metro rail projects are implemented with art energy efficient technology, including deployment of rolling stock with regenerative braking system.
“Such deployment of energy efficient systems resulted in heavy power saving. Solar power panels are also established by metro companies that help reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
