Muharram Holiday 2025: The Muharram Islamic is a symbol of the beginning of the New Year. The government has marked as a temporary date for Ashura on the 10th day of Muharram on 6 July 2025 (Sunday). The day remembers the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, who died in the battle of Karbala in 680 AD.
Since the Islamic calendar follows the moon, the holiday may shift on 7 July (Monday). If this happens, many states are expected to close on Monday instead of schools and offices.
Muharram 2025 Holiday: Some state can declare holiday
States like Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Telangana and West Bengal are expected to announce a holiday on July 7 when Muharram is celebrated. The final announcement will be made by the local or state officials on the basis of religious and administrative coordination.
Why is Muharram important in Islam?
Muharram is the first month of the Islamic calendar and one of the most sacred time for Muslims. On the 10th day, called Ashura, especially important for Shia Muslims. It remembers the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, who died in the battle of Karbala in 680 AD.
The day is marked by prayer, religious ceremonies and mourning processions by the Muslim community.
July school calendar and CBSE holiday list
Most schools in India reopen in early July after summer vacation in June. In northern states like Uttar Pradesh, classes have already started. Apart from Muharram, there are no major holidays in early July.
CBSE has released 2025–26 academic calendar, including national festivals, regional programs and holidays for seasonal brakes. According to the calendar, Muharram is temporarily marked on 6 July (Sunday), but the date may change.
