Amid protests against Rabindranath Tagore’s ancestral house in Bangladesh, poets, writers and intellectuals wrote to Bangladesh Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus on Thursday, seeking “exemplary punishment” for the criminal behind the “embarrassing and condemnable” incident.
A letter signed by eminent litteators Professors Mihir Deb and Ratul Debberman; Famous theater artist Bibhu Bhattacharya; Painter, Mime Artist, and Music Nuttak Academy Awardee Swapan Nandi; And Professor Mujahid Rahman was sent through the office of West Tripura District Magistrate, from where it is expected to send it to the Assistant High Commission of Bangladesh in Agartla. The Assistant High Commission is expected to forward the letter to Dhaka.
In the letter, the signators stated that their opposition was given a voice from Tripura, which had a long relationship with Tagore and was visited by him several times, and that the people of the state were “hurting” an attack in Shahzadpur in Sirajganjpur in Bangladesh at Bangladesh’s ancestral ‘Kachibari’ (Revenue Office).
“Rabindranath Tagore is the consciousness that surrounds all our inspirations, awareness. He is a beacon holder of global idea, who rises above the narrow obstacles of language, identity, religion, color. We celebrate it through the national anthem every day. Removed, unbearable,” reads the letter.
Wandals have not only damaged precious historical wealth, but have also insulted the cultural values of millions and deserve “appropriate justice” and “exemplary punishment”, writers and artists have written in further letters.
On Monday, the ruling BJP protested against barbarism on minority communities and attacks in Bangladesh. BJP state president Rajab Bhattacharjee and leader Upal Bhomik, Bhagwan Das, Mimi Mazumdar, and others carried forward the placards and banners condemning the developments in the neighboring country.
Earlier, on 14 June, similar protests took place in other parts of the state, including Raghana International Border in North Tripura in Unakoti, Sonamura in South Tripura, Sonamura in Belonia, and Agartala.
