Public universities, colleges of Odisha asked to inspect 'Samvidan Hatya Diwas' to mark the 50th year of Emergency India News

The Odisha government has asked all public universities and colleges of the state to inspect “Samvidan Hatya Diwas” on 25 June to mark the 50th year of the Emergency.

In a letter to the Department of Higher Education, Universities and Colleges, an awareness asked for a march organization that included students and faculty members, which promote placards and slogans constitutional values. He was also asked to give debate, workshops and lectures on the importance of emergency, and the importance of constitutional rights and duties.

The department’s letter states that the Emergency accused since June 25, 1975 is a clear reminder of the most dark period in India’s democratic history. The day has been informed by a Union Ministry of information from the Ministry of Home Affairs on July 11, 2024 as “Samvidan Hatya Diwas”, stated in the letter.

“Emergency saw a wide suspension of civil freedom, erosion of constitutional security measures and unprecedented centralization of executive power. Violation of fundamental rights, the press was silenced under strict censorship, (and) thousands of political leaders, journalists and members of civil society were imprisoned,” the letter was read.

It said that the 50th year of Emergency was required for “intensive reflection and new commitment to democratic values ​​and constitutional morals”.

Universities and colleges have also been asked to organize seminars on the preamble of the Constitution, organize panel discussions, various competitions, documentary screening and street plays.

Institutions have been asked to further attend these events and submit records.

The BJP government in Odisha has also made detailed arrangements to inspect ‘Samvidan Hatya Day’ in a state level program. Earlier, the BJP government in the state announced a monthly pension of Rs 20,000 for those imprisoned during the Emergency imposed by the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
