In different parts of Karnataka – especially coastal and Malnad regions – are expected to get some relief from the huge decline, as rainfall is expected to reduce in the next few days.

As per the forecast released by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday, rainfall intensity in Bangalore and other districts of South Interior Karnataka will be reduced. While the rain will be quite widespread till Monday, the forecast says that rain will be scattered for the next five days. In coastal areas, widespread rainfall will continue, although at low intensity.

Although the state has received normal rainfall in this monsoon, the South Interior Karnataka districts are facing losses. The overall deficit in the region is 23 percent between June 1 and July 5, which receives 57 mm as compared to a normal 74 mm. For Bengaluru Urban, the deficit is 31 percent, with the city 54 mm against normal 69 mm. In contrast, the city received more than double rainfall from normal rainfall during the period of pre-monsoon between March 1 and May 31.

In Karnataka, four districts receive more rainfall (20 percent or more than normal), 14 rains in 14, and 13 districts receive deficit (20 percent or less than normal) rainfall.

Due to heavy pre-monsoon rainfall, the reservoirs in southern Karnataka reached full capacity. External from dams, especially Krishnarajsagar (KRS) dams, were increased due to that. It can be remembered that the dam first reached the entire capacity in June this year. Currently, water storage on the dam is 47.63 TMC against the full capacity of 49.45 TMC. On the same date last year, the water level in the dam was 23.05 TMC.

Dams across the Krishna River in North Karnataka received heavy income. In Bagalakot district, Almitt had about 1.02 lakh cusecs per day. The current storage in the dam was 87.74 TMC, compared to 48.98 TMC on the same date last year.
