The demolition of the ancestral home of the legendary filmmaker Satyajit Ray in the city of Mymesingh, Bangladesh, is stopped after a public outrage, about 120 km north of Dhaka.

The Daily had reported on Tuesday that the ancestral house of the famous Litter Upendra Kishore Ray Chaudhary, already used as Mymen Singh Sheshu Academy, was being demolished to make way for a new “semi-concrete structure”. Chaudhary was the father of famous poet, Sukumar Ray and Satyajit Ray’s grandfather.

“Given the historical status of the building, the bungalow is a symbol of cultural renaissance, it would be better to reconsider the demolition and reconstruction options for its repair and reconstruction as a symbol of the museum of literature and the shared culture of India and Bangladesh. The Government of India will be ready to expand cooperation for this purpose.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also urged the Government of India to intervene in this issue and “appealed to the Bangladeshi government and all the right thinking people to preserve this work of rich tradition”.
