VP flutters in Delhi as Dhankhar, on 1 of the monsoon session, two years left in his tenure

The senior leader said, “The government did not want a proposal in the Rajya Sabha as there is already a notice from the opposition seeking to remove the judicial Shekhar Yadav in the House, for which the ruling party is not ready.”

Sources said Dhankhar, a lawyer by profession, was caught in a bond on the Justice Yadav case as the opposition technically had a number to move speed (50 MPs), and he could not reject it.

While Dhankhar did not mention the Justice Yadav case on Monday, he mentioned it, while speaking about the proposal received from 55 MPs in December 2024, demanded the removal of a judge of a High Court of Allahabad. “I investigated and found that a member had signed two places … An investigation was done to find out who had signed twice, allegedly. BJP leaders said that the Vice President’s remarks were seen as reflecting the government, making it unsafe for unfair criticism.

Last year, in December, amidst opposition from farmers in some parts of the country, Dhankar publicly took everyone and surprised everyone, asking the Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan, whether there was any promise to the farmers and why it was not fulfilled. He said that the farmers were “victims”, but “we are doing nothing”.

Commenting on the sudden resignation of Dhankhar, Congress leader Jeram Ramesh talked about his conversation with the Vice President through Monday in the House, and said that Dhankhar had “set a meeting of the Business Advisory Committee at 1 pm yesterday”. “He was to make some major announcements related to the judiciary yesterday.”

Opening the first monsoon session during the day, Dhankhar had urged the members in party lines to reduce the sharp. “While political parties can follow the same goals through different approaches, no one in India oppose the interests of the nation … Dialogue and discussion, not struggle, is not the way forward.”

In his resignation letter, Dhankhar thanked the President for his “unwavering support” and “soothing, amazing working relationship”. He thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Union Council of Ministers for his “invaluable support” and wrote that the warmth and affection shown by the members of Parliament would “be inherent in my memory.”
