A senior doctor at Government Medical College in Thiruvananthapuram said in a Facebook post that three of the four surgery in his department were postponed due to lack of equipment, which led to a political dispute in Kerala.
Head of Urology at Medical College, Dr. Haris Chirkal also said that he has been knocking the door of officers including Kerala Health Minister Veena George for several months.
He said, “Patients are forced to buy surgical equipment. I have an idea about quitting jobs.”
The doctor said that he was disappointed with the bureaucratic hurdle that was delaying the supply of surgical equipment. He said that he was ready to face the results, even though it involves dismissal from government service to “speak the truth”.
The Congress targeted the CPI (M) -T Front Government in the state about the issue, and said that Kerala’s health sector is on “ventilator support”.
Health Minister Veena George said on Saturday that the issue had never come before her or the director of medical education. According to the “DME report, one of the four surgery on Thursday, one, was postponed due to some obstacle with an investigation (a surgical tool). The issue is neither before me nor the department,” he said.
Director of Medical Education, Dr. KV Vishwanathan said that an explanation would be sought from the doctor, and if it is not satisfactory then action will be taken against him.

Dr. Haris got stuck on his stance and supported the Kerala Government Medical College Teachers Association.
The doctor told the media, “The truth should not be covered. Many of my friends have joined private hospitals and have become millionpatis. I have studied in a government medical college and I am working in the government sector with the intention of giving back the society.”
Later, the minister said, “I think Dr. Haris is a real and hardworking doctor. He had specifically told some things. I have asked DME to conduct a detailed investigation on issues he had raised.”
Congress opposition leader VD Satheson said that the state’s health sector is on ventilator support.

“We are repeatedly boosting issues that Dr. Haris has told. The actual picture of the state’s health sector is different from whatever is being introduced by the PR agencies. The issue is not limited to Thiruvananthapuram Medical College. Other medical colleges of the state are also facing shortage of equipment,” said the Congress leader.
