Officials said the 14-member central team of several agencies will visit Odisha Jajpur, where five people have died and some 500 have been hospitalized due to cholera outbreak in the last week.
A team of experts from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), National Center for Disease Control (NCDC), Food Safety and World Health Organization (WHO) will be in the district to include the situation.
In Jajpur district, four blocks and one urban local body are said to be the highest hits from the outbreak, although there are reports of cholera related diseases from three other districts, including Bhadrak, Kenjhar and parts of Cuttack.
Odisha’s Public Health Director Nilakantha Mishra said, “Of the 41 stool samples sent to the laboratory from Jajpur district, eight conducted positive tests for Vibrio cholera. The number of affected persons is gradually decreasing.”
However, sources indicate that the toll of death may be as much as 11. When asked, Mishra said that only one body examination can confirm the cause of death in six other cases.

Jajpur Chief District Medical Officer Prakash Chandra Bal said that the situation in Jajpur was under control and officials are “monitoring the situation at the micro level”.
“Engineering Department, administrative wings and district administration are working to ensure that the situation should not move forward. Awareness is also being made in every panchayat,” Bal said.

The Jajpur district administration has canceled the holidays from 14 to 16 June in view of the three -day long Raja Mahotsav. All the offices in the district will now be open during this period, in which the administration is also banning community feasts during the festival.
Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja reviewed the situation on Friday and directed the administration of the surrounding districts to be cautious to investigate the spread of water-borne diseases.
