Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar said on Saturday that his government has decided to increase the pension of senior citizens, widows and disabled people to Rs 700 per month.
He said that the beneficiaries will get an increased pension of Rs 1,100 from July.
Kumar said on X, “I am happy to inform you that under the Social Security Pension Scheme, all the elderly, disabled and widow women will now get a pension of Rs 1,100 instead of Rs 400 every month.
He said that the pension amount will be sent to the accounts of all beneficiaries on the 10th day of every month.
“This decision of the government will help the beneficiaries and ensure that they live a dignified and socially safe life, which is the top priority of the government. Social security is recognized as an important component of the development process,” Bandana Preyashi, Secretary, Social Welfare Department, told PTI.
CM said that the total number of beneficiaries for the pension scheme in the state is more than 1.09 crore.
The Chief Minister said, “Elderly people are an important part of the society, and their dignified life is our top priority. The state government will continue to try in this direction.”

This decision assumes the importance that the state will go to the assembly elections in a few months.
An official, on the condition of anonymity, said that the increase in pension will be an additional burden of Rs 3594.42 crore annually on the state’s treasury.
Earlier, the government was spending Rs 5,405.58 crore, and now it will have to spend Rs 9,000 crore annually.
The official said that this decision of the government will now be sent for the approval of the cabinet.

Social Security Program, under which pension has been increased, Indira Gandhi National Old Edge Pension Scheme, Indira Gandhi National Widow Pension Scheme, Indira Gandhi National Disability Pension Scheme, Laxmibai Social Security Pension Scheme, Bihar Disability Pension Scheme and Mukhyamant Vardhajan Pension Scheme are there.
Bihar Vice President Samrat Chaudhary said that the interest rate on loans for ‘Jeevika Didi’ has decreased by 3 percent.
This decision will provide relief to women, elderly and disabled people, he said.
