Officials said that after Sabarmati Ashram in Gujarat, more Gandhian heritage site in Vardh district of Maharashtra is ready to change in the next 18 months.

These sites are located in the premises of Gandhi Smriti Bhavan, Kasturba Kitchen and Wardha Haat – Mahatma Gandhi Institute for Rural Industries (MGIRI), which work under the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises.

MGIRI, who is funding for a project of Rs 45 crore, signed an MoU with Indira Gandhi National Center for the Arts (IGNCA) earlier this week, which will fulfill the efforts for protection and restoration.

Officials said that experts who complete the project will be selected through a competitive bidding process and soon a detailed project report will be prepared.

IGNCA member-secretary Sachidanand Joshi said: “After leaving the Sabarmati Ashram (in 1933), Gandhi stayed in Wardha for two years, and promised to return after India’s independence. The place became a basis for his home and his freedom struggle activities.”

Gandhi Smriti Bhavan served as a field for Mahatma Gandhi during the freedom struggle. Haat, or Market, is associated with the All India Gram Industries Association established by Gandhi in 1934, which is to revive and improve village industries across India.

Under the project, Gandhi Smriti Bhavan and Kasturba kitchen will be “converted into immersive, multimedia museums with prayer sites”, while Wardha Haat will be converted into a artisan market to revive the Gandhi rural economy through crafts and culture “.

Joshi said, “The mandate is meant to preserve and preserve heritage buildings in the premises, while to ensure that the MGIRI is ready as a center for excellence to empower rural youth from the region,” Joshi said.

Experts will make a structural evaluation of existing buildings in the premises.

IGNCA, which comes under the Ministry of Culture, is planning to introduce curate trails with a digital story on Gandhian philosophy. Life-size statues of Gandhi and traditional village artisans will tell the stories of rural India.

Joshi said that public facilities, cafes, souvenir shops and directed tourism have also been planned.
