The Odisha police on Tuesday arrested the prominent accused in the gang rape of an 18 -year -old girl in Jagat Singhpur district, police sources said, saying that the victim is for another accused.
Officials said that according to their investigation, the accused persons allegedly intercepted the victim, while she was going to her friend’s place for birthday celebrations and sexually assaulted her at a different place at a distance of about 400 meters from her house. Police said that then she managed to return home, after which she was taken to the hospital.
A family member said that she is currently undergoing treatment, and her condition is stable.
Based on his father’s complaint, a gang rape case has been registered.
Jagat Singhpur SP Bhavani Shankar Udgata said that the police have formed three teams of senior officers to nab the accused and raids at various places overnight.
“While one team managed to catch the prominent accused, other teams are conducting raids in the nearby districts. The accused will be produced before the court after their medical examination. Efforts are on to catch the other accused,” the SP said.
Police said that a scientific team has searched the crime site and further investigation is being done in the case.
