Calling it one of the deepest chapters in India’s democratic history, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on the 50th year of the Emergency that no Indian would forget the method in which the spirit of the Constitution was violated and the voice of Parliament created the voice.
“Today is fifty years since one of the deepest chapters in India’s democratic history, emergency. The people of India mark this day as Samvidan Hatya Day. On this day, the values vested in the Indian Constitution were kept separate, fundamental rights were suspended, press freedom was extinguished and many political leaders, social workers, students and common citizens were jailed, “the Prime Minister wrote on X (East Twitter).
Smoting Indira Gandhi’s then Congress government for “holding democracy under arrest”, the PM said: “No Indian will ever forget the method in which the spirit of our Constitution was violated, the voice of Parliament is necessary and an attempt was made to control the courts.
The Prime Minister also talked about those who were “firm in the fight against emergency”. “These were people from all over India, from all areas of life, from diverse ideologies, who worked with each other: to protect India’s democratic clothes and to preserve the ideals for which our freedom fighters dedicated their lives. It was to ensure their collective struggle that the Congress government had to call for fresh elections, which they had lost from the burra.”
PM Modi also reiterated his government’s commitment to work together to strengthen the principles in our constitution and to feel the vision of a developed India.
