In an important step towards increasing its revenue, Indian Railways are ready to start exporting locomotives in a coastal country Guinea in West Africa. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will stop the flag to the first locomotive for exports on 20 June for exports at the diesel locomotive factory in Marhowrah in Saran district of Bihar.
PM Modi will also flag Vande Bharat train between Petaliputra (Bihar) and Gorakhpur (Uttar Pradesh). This is the first time Indian Railways will export locomotives, which will add to its revenue.
A senior Railway Ministry official said that earlier exports were done as a line of credit, which was a kind of assistance for development projects in various countries. These locomotives were sent to countries like Bangladesh, Mozambique.
The official said that a total of 150 locomotive guinea would be supplied in three years. The Marhowrah factory is built on a public-private-partner (PPP) model and is run by the GE transport joint venture, American company Wabtec and share of Indian Railways.
“The factory won the bid in a global tender issued by Guinea. These locomotives will be used to transport goods from iron ore mines in the country. Which will allow wireless control of several locomotives in a train.
According to the contract, Railways will supply a total of 37 locomotives in financial year 2025-26 (FY26), 82 in FY27 and 37 in 31 in FY28.
“The total contract price is $ 411 million (Rs 3,533 crore). This means that, the cost of a locomotive will be $ 2.74 million or Rs 23.55 crore. Locomotives are equipped with AC propulsion, regenerative braking, microprocessor-based control and modular architecture. Along with this, it is built with emission standards, fire detection systems and ergonomic crew cabins, with modern features such as refrigerators, microwaves and waterless toilet systems.
“This exports range to the Marhowarah factory as a global hub for locomotive exports, strengthening local employment and technical capacity. It will contribute to the construction of infrastructure for the largest iron ore project of Guinea, deepens Indo-Enemies, deepening India-Africa Economic Cooperation In Bihar’s Marhowa factory, 285 people are indirectly employed.”
Indian Railways has a total of four loco production units – Diesel Locomotive Works in Varanasi, Chittaranjan Locomotive Works in Chittaranjan, in Chittaranjan, diesel modernization works in Patiala and Electric Loco Assembly and Assistant Unit in Dunkuni.
DLW and DMW Diesel Loco Production Units were units. However, he started construction of electric loco from 2016-17 and 2018-19 respectively. The other two production units, CLW and Elaau are only manufacturing electric loco.

Two more pus – Marhowara Factory and another Greenfield Electric Loco Factory in Meghpura, Bihar – are built on PPP mode, supplying diesel and electric loco.
