CJI Br Gavai on Wednesday reiterated criticism of Telangana government tree in the Kancha Gachibovali region of Hyderabad, stating that it could not be justified as proper growth to clean it overnight to use bulldozers.
CJI Gavai, presiding over the bench of three-judges, was hearing the supu case registered by the court on felting by the CM Revanth Reddy-Left government in the forest area near the Hyderabad University (UOH) campus in Ranga Reddy district of Telangana (UOH) campus.
The CJI verbally commented, “I am a lawyer for sustainable development myself, but this does not mean that you should appoint 30 bulldozers overnight and clean all the forests.”
The bench postponed the hearing by August 13 to enable some intervening those who were able to file their response for the affidavit filed by the state.
The dispute arose by a government order by the Telangana State Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (TSIIC), demanding it to separate the 400 acres of green cover land in the Kancha Gachibovli forest area for the establishment of the infrastructure.

Taking cognizance of the suo motu cognizance of the case, the apex court directed to stay in the earlier hearing on the deforestation drive and warned the state officials of contempt of court proceedings. The SC then warned the state counsel, “If you want (your) Chief Secretary to be saved from serious action, then you have to come out with a plan how you will restore those 100 acres.”
The issue came at the forefront when a report came to light that a significant number of trees fell in the weekend starting from March 30, 2025. Students and environmental activists staged a protest against the government’s functions, attracting HC’s attention. He demanded that the state withdraw its decision to auction the land, saying that no excuse for development is not justified the destruction of the environment.
