Two officers of the Assam government have been arrested in connection with the alleged suicide by a 29 -year -old Assistant Engineer in the state’s Public Works Department.
The assistant engineer, who was from Guwahati, was appointed in December 2023 and posted in Bongagaon district.
Police said she was found dead in her apartment in Bongiagaon on Tuesday, and an alleged suicide note was recovered from the site.
Bongagon Senior Superintendent of Police, Mohan Lal Meena, confirmed that he had nominated two officers, describing the pressure of the alleged workplace after an FIR was registered for suicide on the basis of his family complaint.
“Two persons are being questioned,” he said. He was posted as PWD Executive Engineer and Sub-Division Officer in the district respectively.
In the alleged note, he has accused the “extreme tension” and a lack of guidance in the workplace, as he was assigned a project for a mini-stadium, stating that he had a lack of experience and help.
He alleged that the contractor’s estimate was “major discrepancies and variations” and named two officers, who continued on the project despite seeking help.

Her father also alleged that she was under pressure to clean the bloated bills.
“He did not specifically tell us anything. He just told me that one day, he would be sent to jail, while his superiors would be transferred only as a punishment … he was scared; he was pressurizing him to pass the bloated bills. If the work was done for Rs 1 crore, he had passed the bill of Rs 2 crore. He wanted to go with only rules.
When asked about the allegations by reporters during the visit to Dibrugarh, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “We are not yet fully investigating the allegations, but for now, the SDO and Executive Engineer have been arrested.”
