A 15 -year -old girl suffered serious injuries on Saturday morning after three unidentified assailants in Puri district of Odisha, when she was on the way to a friend’s house.
He was initially rushed to Pipili Hospital in Puri and later taken to AIIMS, Bhubaneswar. Sources in the hospital said that she faces more than 40% burning injuries and her condition is stable.
According to the local people, the incident took place at 8.30 am at one place which comes under the jurisdiction of Balanga police station. The attackers allegedly chased her for a separate stretch on the banks of the Bhargavi River, where they set him on fire before fleeing the scene. The local residents reached the spot after hearing his screams and took him to the nearest hospital.
Police sources said the motive behind the attack is not yet clear. Sources said that senior police officers of Puri district participated on the spot and started investigating the matter from several angles.
Expressing concern over the incident, Odisha’s sub -seema Prasavati Parida said that the police have been asked to immediately arrest the culprits and take strict action against them. Varda said that arrangements were being made to provide the best possible treatment to the girl and the state government will bear all medical expenses.
The incident occurred a few days later when a student of a major government college died when his complaints were set on fire after a professor accused him of sexual harassment. It has put a spotlight on the safety of girls in the state and triggered nationwide resentment.
