A police officer was killed and several others were injured in an instantaneous explosive equipment (IED) explosion in Sukma district of Chhattisgarh in early Monday.
Additional Superintendent of Police Akash Rao Giripunj, who was posted in the Konta Division, patrolling with other personnel on the Konta-Aarobora Road near Dronda, when he accidentally stepped on a pressure, which is believed to be installed by the Maoists.
The patrol was part of the precautions from the country-wide shutdown calls by the banned Communist Party of India (MAOIST) on 10 June.
The officer was rushed to Konta Hospital, but he bowed to his injuries. Other officers and youths who were with them are subject to treatment and are said to be out of danger.
This year takes the total number of security personnel killed in Maoist-related incidents. The number of Maoists killed in encounters this year is 209 in Chhattisgarh, including 192 in Bastar region. Last year, 219 Maoists were killed in Chhattisgarh, including 217 in Bastar region.
