ISRO said on Monday that the much awaited launch of the Axiom-4 mission for the International Space Station (ISS) has been postponed on 11 June.

The SpaceX rocket was first set to liftoff on 8 June, but the launch was pushed back by 10 June. At that time, the Axiom Space said: “This allows shift teams to estimate for the approximate weather during SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket and dragon spacecraft transport, in addition to completing the final processing of the spacecraft before the launch.

This will be a fourth private astronaut flight from Axiom Space and will first take an Indian astronaut to the International Space Station (ISS).

The pilot by Shubhinhu Shukla of India, the mission is an important milestone, fulfilling the commitment made by US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which collaborates the station and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) with the Indian Space Agency in the mission.

Why was the launch postponed?

The space agency said, “Due to weather conditions, the Axiom-4 mission has been inaugurated from 10 June 2025 to 11 June 2025 to send Indian Gaganati to the international space station. The launch time is IST at 5:30 pm on 11 June 2025.”

In particular, Shukla will be the second Indian to travel in space after Rakesh Sharma, who made a spaceflight in 1984. Shukla is an alumnus of National Defense Academy (NDA), Pune. He was commissioned in the Indian Air Force (IAF) Fighter Wing in June 2006 and became a group captain in March 2024. Shukla has a 2,000-hour flight experience in various aircraft, including SU-30 MKI, MIG-21, MIG-29, Jaguar, Hawk, Dornier and AN-32.

The AX-4 crew and SpaceX teams had ended a full rehearsal of launch-day activities before their launch on Monday and Mission is ready to take astronauts to the space station before Hungary and Poland.

Four crew members in the mission are from the United States, India, Poland and Hungary. Pagi Whitson will lead the Human Spaceflight director and a former NASA astronaut commercial mission in the Axiom Space and will serve as ISRO’s astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla Pilot. In addition, the ESA (European Space Agency) project astronaut Sylawosz will be part of the Uznoski-Inevsky’s Poland and Hungary’s Tibor Kapu Mission.
