Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday claimed that the population of Muslims in Assam would be almost equal to Hindus by 2041 if the current growth rate is maintained.
Addressing a press conference after a cabinet meeting here, Sarma claimed that according to the 2011 census, about 34 percent of Muslims, 31 percent were those who had previously moved to Assam.
Asked if the Assamese indigenous people will become a minority after a few years, he said, “This is not me to do, this is just the result of the census. Today, according to the 2011 census, 34 percent of the population is Muslim.” Among the total Muslim population of the state, three percent of indigenous Assamese are Muslims, Sarma said.
“… then 31 percent of Muslims who went to Assam. And if you project for 2021, 2031 and 2041, you will come in place of about 50:50. I am just telling what the report of the statistical census says,” he claimed.
The CM said that empirical data and previous census records suggest that in a few years from now, Assam’s Muslim population will be close to 50 percent.
