The Tripura unit of Trinmool Congress (TMC) on Thursday criticized the ruling BJP for treating Bengali speaking people as illegal immigrants.

His comments came two days later of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, TMC was targeted to ‘distort’ his comments on Bengali -speaking Muslims.

Considering his comments as ‘humiliating’, TMC accused him of being disgusting to Bengalis and demanded an apology to him.

Citing Sarma’s comments, TMC leader Milton Chakma said on Thursday, “No particular community should be targeted and called Bangladeshi. We are also against illegal immigrants. But we are protesting against any efforts to target any particular community in the name of combating illegal immigration.”
TMC leaders also criticized the state government’s move to set up smart electric meters, as well as with the decision of Agartla Municipal Corporation (AMC) to increase water taxes.
The party said it would perform a sit-in outside the AMC office in Agartala on July 28 to protest against the increase in water taxes.
